Illinois legislative issues • Dent-IL PAC By:
Andrew Browar, DDS; ISOP representative
Dent-IL-Pac supports the legislative initiatives and interests of Illinois dentists on behalf of the Illinois State Dental Society. 2012 efforts include:
1. Successfully passed ruling requiring Delta Dental to pay to non-participating dentists for the Illinois State Employee Plan.
2. Successful blockage of the most recent attempts to allow
independent practice by hygienists.
3. Blockage of a provision for assistants to provide “coordinated care” without the supervision of a dentist.
4. Blocked attempts to remove required fluoridation of water supplies.
5. Successful blockage of requiring verification of insurance participation of a dentist if you are referring a patient (this was huge for us!)
Remember to support Dent-IL-PAC when you renew you ADA/ISDS membership. Also support ADPAC. These contributions pay dividends in limiting unnecessary burdens on our practices.
News from the American Academy of Periodontology
Illinois falls under District 4. We have 3 representatives in our district, two of which are local to IL: Dr. Greg Fauth (Aurora, IL) and Dr. Tim Walsh (Berwyn, IL).
Current matters pertinent from the AAP include:
1. The election of a new AAP Executive Director will be announced at the 98th annual meeting in Los Angeles (September 29-October 2, 2012). The academy has
been on a grueling search to replace Alice DeForest, who will be retiring after 26 years of dedicated service to the AAP.
From the Department of Professional Regulations
1. The Illinois Department of Professional Regulations has voted to require dentists applying for a license to have taken the Periodontal Patient Portion of the ADEX
Exam. As we all know ,it is one procedure to assure the folks understand the basics of Periodontal Care.
2. Governor Quinn signed the bill to allow non-participating dentists with Delta who see state workers to have assignment of benefits. This is another action to
help us all in the care of our patients.
